Finding Local Takeaways Using Your IPhone
We all know the feeling of being in a new or unfamiliar city, just looking for something good to eat and all we can find is a dodgy looking McDonalds. I had it recently, walking around Nottingham’s streets trying to find a decent Chinese or Indian takeaway.
But if you’re an iPhone owner, then you don’t have to worry about this problem. A quick look on the App Store will reveal a huge number of apps geared towards finding restaurants in your vicinity, using the iPhones’ GPS to locate you.
The Around Me app is an excellent example, and allows you to find banks, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets (basically anything you might need) and then provides you with user reviews, directions and a wealth of other information on your chosen listing.
If you don’t fancy downloading an app, but you have an iPhone 3G, you can get online while out and about and go a Google search for what you’re after. For example whilst out and about, I did a quick search for ‘Chinese takeaway Nottingham‘ & ‘Indian Takeaway Nottingham‘ using the iPhones’ built-in web browser (Safari). The results were returned quickly, and i found some incredibly useful recommendations for (and directions to) decent local eateries.
If you can’t get your phone online, you could of course always try a local enquiry line, who should be able to give you suitable recommendations. For example, i called one of these lines and asked for decent Nottingham takeaways and was immediately given the number of one that the operator recommended, as they lived in Nottingham themselves.
So you can always use your phone to find a good restaurant or takeaway one way or another, and this is just one of a thousand reasons why it’s a good idea to get yourself a smartphone.
Just Released The Motorola Droid X
Today Verizon threw its hat in the ring to compete against the other smart phone heavyweights. This Android powered phone has been awaited by Verizon clients and Android fans, promising the greatest combination of features and technology available for Android (and arguably all smart phones.
The launch of Droid X began with a feel good partnership agreement between Google and Verizon. Shantanu Narayen, the CEO of Adobe Systems, emphasized the presence of Flash support to the new Android phone. His charasmatic persona may not be to par with Steve Jobs, but his presence shows the seriousness that all three companies have, and promises that the Droid X will be the very first smart phone to be able to support Adobe Flash.
Unfortunately, the corporate types felt compelled to tell us things we already know. Mobility is more than a phone, it is the sum of software, network, hardware, how the platform’s maturity parallels the desktop platforms changes over the years, blah blah blah. We know this already, so why do these launch events always talk down to their audience? It’s not like anyone from the general public is there. Anyone who takes the time to show up is already deeply interested in the category and is aware of the changing nature of mobile communications.
That aside, now the good stuff. They go into details of some of the features, promising a lot of entertainment for Droid X owners. Of course there will be Verizon’s V CAST video support. They even announced several partnerships to give you content from NFL Mobile, Skype, Blockbuster video rentals on the go, as well as a backup assistant to protect your data (presumably for when you throw the phone to the ground in rage if your NFL team loses to its rivals).
On the specs front, the screen size is 4.3″ diagonally. This is a monster size phone, but the extra screen real estate will come in handy. With one of the biggest LCD screens, a Droid X screen protector is recommended to keep the screen clean and scratch-free. It seems a little defensive by taking a shot at higher resolution screens such as the iPhone, claiming that when asked consumers would choose a larger screen. But the audience gives a laugh at the “quantity vs quality” jab.
The processor is a 1 GHz OMAP chip, it sports 8GB of RAM memory, and 16GB of storage. It includes an expansion card to add up to 32GB for a total of 40GB of storage. It has a multi-touch keyboard using Swype.
It can serve as a WiFi hotspot, so you’ll be able to connect your laptop to the internet through your phone. They say you can connect up to five devices, though I doubt the speed would be tolerable with that many devices sharing the phone’s Internet connection.
For voice communications, it includes three microphones. Why three? One is for telephone calls, one for video calls, and one is used for cancel out background noise. It includes Bluetooth voice dialing.
For corporate users, this includes support for Gmail enterprise and MS Exchange. As expected, it allows push email, remote management/data wipe, and other IT department pleasers.
Adobe Flash 10.1 we are told has been completely rewritten so it can support the Droid platform better.
In regards to flash, the 8mb digital camera has a flash for taking photos. It also can record 720p HD video. It includes an HDMI out to connect your phone to your TV to share photos and videos.
The data plans announced is $29.99 for unlimited download, and you can add WiFi tethering for $20 including 2GB of data. I am not certain to why you need an extra 2GB of data if the $29.99 plan is “unlimited,” but I am sure this will become clear shortly. Perhaps the 2GB limit with 5 cents per MB overage limit is for tethering only, and any data used on the phone is unlimited.
The Motorola Droid X will be available July 15th, at $199 after rebate. The price is just right, you’ll probably even have enough money to buy Motorola Droid X accessories. They announced that this device will be US only, though i’m sure there will be similar devices created for the rest of the world.
Will this be the one to finally “kill” the iPhone? Time will tell, but it is definitely a heavy hitter to go against all the other smart phones. It is unlikely to have the same flocking effect that iPhone had for AT&T, where people left service providers they liked for AT&T just to get the iPhone. But for Verizon customers that have iPhone envy, this is a very good reason to stay with Verizon.
Is The Motorola Droid X The Beginning Of The End For Apple?
A beatdown is about to go down in Silicon Valley, and Apple is about to get crushed.
Steve Jobs’ reign of terror and selling people their own socks is just about to come to a screeching halt. The last two iterations of the iPhone has been utterly disappointing, with Apple adding slightly more battery life, faster processors, better cameras, and a higher resolution screen. That’s it. Nothing I’d consider magical, but just enough to get Apple fanboys off the couch and into a long line only to find out the mobile phone they needed to survive was totally under produced. The main features of the iPhone 4 — multitasking and adding backgrounds, things Google had integrated into Android from the beginning. So, if you are shopping for something truly magical this cell phone season, you better take the Droid X for a test drive. The price is also just right for the Droid X, coming in at $199, which leaves enough room to purchase Droid X accessories.
Droid X, the brainchild of Google, Motorola, Verizon and Adobe is what the iPhone 4 could have been And, thanks to Steve Jobs’ refusal to play nicely with other companies (eg, barring Adobe Flash, and refusing to build a Verizon-compatible iPhone), the Motorola Droid X is probably just the ticket Google have been looking for to munch into Apple’s healthy share of the smartphone market. In a report published by market research firm comScore in April, Google went from owning 3.8% of the mobile phone market in November 2009 to owning an impressive 9% of the wireless phone market in February 2010. Apple, however, controlled slightly higher than 25 percent of the pda phone market in that same time frame. Here is where the Motorola Droid X comes in.
The Droid X sports an 8-megapixel camera, Adobe Flash compatibility (a VERY big deal), a Wi-Fi hotspot that powers up to 5 devices, Swype compatibility (a clever keyboard program that’ll make poking a digital keyboard a less stressful experience), and an HDMI output. Also, the Droid X will feature a large 4.3in LCD screen, which you will almost certainly want to protect it with a Droid X screen protector. This is an absolute iPhone killer, and if Google can tack on nearly 5% more marketshare in 3 months without a product leading the charge, We have to imagine that the Droid X can lift Google’s ownership of the mobile phone market to a realistic fifteen-percent by the end of 2010, possibly swiping some marketshare away from Apple.
And one of the biggest selling points as we go into the next era of smartphones — the price. Thanks to Verizon, the Droid X will have a $30 infinite data plan, unlike AT&T, which recently announced it will start slapping some serious price penalties on new smartphone users who use more 2 gigabytes of data per month. For those of you with an iPhone, that’s not projected to be a whole lot of Netflix films when you leave the friendly confines of your Wi-Fi.
So, before blindly throwing any more money at Apple, check out the more geek-friendly and genuinely revolutionary The Motorola Droid X.
