Just Released The Motorola Droid X

Today Verizon threw its hat in the ring to compete against the other smart phone heavyweights. This Android powered phone has been awaited by Verizon clients and Android fans, promising the greatest combination of features and technology available for Android (and arguably all smart phones.

The launch of Droid X began with a feel good partnership agreement between Google and Verizon. Shantanu Narayen, the CEO of Adobe Systems, emphasized the presence of Flash support to the new Android phone. His charasmatic persona may not be to par with Steve Jobs, but his presence shows the seriousness that all three companies have, and promises that the Droid X will be the very first smart phone to be able to support Adobe Flash.

Unfortunately, the corporate types felt compelled to tell us things we already know. Mobility is more than a phone, it is the sum of software, network, hardware, how the platform’s maturity parallels the desktop platforms changes over the years, blah blah blah. We know this already, so why do these launch events always talk down to their audience? It’s not like anyone from the general public is there. Anyone who takes the time to show up is already deeply interested in the category and is aware of the changing nature of mobile communications.

That aside, now the good stuff. They go into details of some of the features, promising a lot of entertainment for Droid X owners. Of course there will be Verizon’s V CAST video support. They even announced several partnerships to give you content from NFL Mobile, Skype, Blockbuster video rentals on the go, as well as a backup assistant to protect your data (presumably for when you throw the phone to the ground in rage if your NFL team loses to its rivals).

On the specs front, the screen size is 4.3″ diagonally. This is a monster size phone, but the extra screen real estate will come in handy. With one of the biggest LCD screens, a Droid X screen protector is recommended to keep the screen clean and scratch-free. It seems a little defensive by taking a shot at higher resolution screens such as the iPhone, claiming that when asked consumers would choose a larger screen. But the audience gives a laugh at the “quantity vs quality” jab.

The processor is a 1 GHz OMAP chip, it sports 8GB of RAM memory, and 16GB of storage. It includes an expansion card to add up to 32GB for a total of 40GB of storage. It has a multi-touch keyboard using Swype.

It can serve as a WiFi hotspot, so you’ll be able to connect your laptop to the internet through your phone. They say you can connect up to five devices, though I doubt the speed would be tolerable with that many devices sharing the phone’s Internet connection.

For voice communications, it includes three microphones. Why three? One is for telephone calls, one for video calls, and one is used for cancel out background noise. It includes Bluetooth voice dialing.

For corporate users, this includes support for Gmail enterprise and MS Exchange. As expected, it allows push email, remote management/data wipe, and other IT department pleasers.

Adobe Flash 10.1 we are told has been completely rewritten so it can support the Droid platform better.

In regards to flash, the 8mb digital camera has a flash for taking photos. It also can record 720p HD video. It includes an HDMI out to connect your phone to your TV to share photos and videos.

The data plans announced is $29.99 for unlimited download, and you can add WiFi tethering for $20 including 2GB of data. I am not certain to why you need an extra 2GB of data if the $29.99 plan is “unlimited,” but I am sure this will become clear shortly. Perhaps the 2GB limit with 5 cents per MB overage limit is for tethering only, and any data used on the phone is unlimited.

The Motorola Droid X will be available July 15th, at $199 after rebate. The price is just right, you’ll probably even have enough money to buy Motorola Droid X accessories. They announced that this device will be US only, though i’m sure there will be similar devices created for the rest of the world.

Will this be the one to finally “kill” the iPhone? Time will tell, but it is definitely a heavy hitter to go against all the other smart phones. It is unlikely to have the same flocking effect that iPhone had for AT&T, where people left service providers they liked for AT&T just to get the iPhone. But for Verizon customers that have iPhone envy, this is a very good reason to stay with Verizon.

Apple’s iPhone Cons

iPhone Insurance

The Apple iPhone has become one of the most popular products in recent years but there are some limitations to the iPhone.

The iPhone has a 2.75G quad-band GSM capability, its text and email services and Wi-Fi services, but it is far from perfect.iPhone does have its limitations. They keep people from using certain features and also prevent most iPhone customization. I really hope Apple will fix these problems in the near future though.

No custom ringtones

One of the biggest limitations that the iPhone has is that the product does not allow for any custom ringtones to be used.  While an iPhone will have a four, eight or sixteen gigabyte hard drive where several hundred mp3 files can be fit onto the hard drive none of these files can be used for ringtone use.  Only the ones that are available on the phone can use them.

Apple had in fact set it up that you should pay through iTunes store in order to get customized ring tones which I am really not happy about.Other solutions I found need you to fork out some cash to purchase a software for such customization. Therefore, I find that customizing the iPhone is greatly limited.

Camera on the iPhone

The camera on the iPhone is a strong one, as it has two megapixels of picture quality. While pictures can be taken for sending to people or for iPhone customization there is a significant limitation to the camera. If you check, you will find that there is no near future plan by Apple to upgrade the iPhone picture quality.

it cannot record videos on the fly. Of course, the four or eight gigabyte hard drive is a major factor in this because recording one’s one video files can take up a great amount of space on the phone.

Limited Flash support

Flash is used on many popular websites, including hot video sites like Google Video and Youtube. There is limited Flash support on the iPhone though. it is troublesome to surf on some certain sites without a problem as a result. More websites are utilizing Flash and would cause a problem to the Apple iPhone unless Apple is able to provide a quick fix in the near future.

Difficulty to write

The last of the limitations of the iPhone is that of the difficultly in writing things at times. The iPhone has a touch screen feature and it can be tough to write things on the iPhone with speed. For example, the virtual keyboard on the iPhone is tremendously useful, but users still ahve to go to another menu every time they want to enter a comma, period or other punctuation marks. While the touch screen is great and is incredibly responsive to what one enters on it this is a problem that makes it harder to write things. With the great sales that the iPhone has gotten in recent months the iPhone limits have been discovered too. However, as time goes on newer iPhone models will be available in the future, and many of these models should be able to correct the problems that are listed here.
